Kevin Keenan, San Diego ACLU's executive director, presents Marston Award to Vince Hall.
SAN DIEGO - Today, at its Annual Membership meeting, the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties is honoring Vince Hall, the Vice President of Public Affairs & Communications for Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties, with its greatest honor, the Helen Marston Award, as well as recognizing Bill of Rights Honorees Peggy Cathcart and Dorothy Hampton for their volunteer service to the organization.
Vince Hall was selected for the Marston award for his incredible contributions to civil liberties and, in particular, reproductive freedom.
Helen Marston founded the San Diego ACLU in 1933. Marston was a champion of civil liberties for all, an activist for peace, and a fighter for social reform. The Helen Marston Award is given at the discretion of the Board of Directors to an individual or group who has exhibited enduring and significant devotion to the cause of civil liberties or who has courageously defended constitutional rights in the face of adverse public opinion at great personal cost.
Hall is the Vice President of Public Affairs & Communications for Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties, where he oversees media marketing, public relations, political activities, and governmental relations programs. Among his many accomplishments, he played a leading role in successful statewide campaigns against the parental notice initiatives Proposition 73, 85, and 4.
Hall and his team at Planned Parenthood muster to protect women's rights not only in California, but wherever there is need, for instance, running a phone calling campaign to inform Mississippi voters of the problems with the so-called "personhood" initiative that was recently defeated. Before joining Planned Parenthood, Hall served as Staff Director for Governor Gray Davis and District Director for Representative Bob Filner.
In addition to the Marston award, the San Diego ACLU is also presenting the Bill of Rights Award to Peggy Carthcart and Dorothy Hampton. Both Carthcart and Hampton have dedicated countless volunteer hours, including documenting and preserving the San Diego ACLU's history.
