ACLU-SDIC Testimony Supporting Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe for San Diego City Council President
The following is a prepared testimony given by ACLU-SDIC Executive Director Norma Chávez-Peterson to San Diego City Council in support of Monica Montgomery Steppe for San Diego City Council President.
Good Afternoon, Councilmembers.
My name is Norma Chávez-Peterson. I am the executive director of the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties, a member of the Monica for City Council President coalition.
I’m here to affirm Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe’s deep understanding of San Diegans’ shared values, the issues that hinder our progress, and the function of government to achieve a more equitable city for us all.
2020 has been a challenging year, with many decisive moments for our government leaders. This vote is such a moment.
When so many people believe they have good reason to distrust politicians and government institutions, San Diegans deserve leaders who are transparent, accessible, responsive, collaborative, forward-leaning, effective and accountable.
As Council President, Montgomery Steppe will set this example every day.
On behalf of our organization and all San Diegans committed to justice and inclusion, I urge you to choose Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe as City Council President.
