ACLU Comment on Governor Brown’s State of the State

SACRAMENTO—Today, Governor Brown delivered his final State of the State Address, highlighting, among many other things, California’s productive journey towards sound criminal justice reforms.

In response, Margaret Dooley-Sammuli, Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Director with the American Civil Liberties Union of California, had this to say:

“Over the past few years, California has been a pioneer in enacting smart criminal justice reforms, with Governor Brown at the helm. During this time, Brown has demonstrated a true commitment to addressing inequities, flaws, and waste in California’s fraught justice system.

Shifting away from years of draconian and failed tough-on-crime doctrines, Brown has led California in ushering a new era of criminal justice reforms centered on fairness, redemption, rehabilitation and local community solutions. For that, we thank him.

As his tenure as governor begins to come to a close, we look forward to continuing to work with Brown and the Legislature to end this year on a high note and ensure our justice system delivers on its promise of fairness and justice for all.”
