Nuestra constitución fue diseñada para proteger a la ciudadanía de los abusos de poder del gobierno. Pero con demasiada frecuencia, los derechos de quienes ingresan al sistema de justicia penal corren peligro o son ignorados.

Los derechos garantizados a los acusados, demandados, infractores y prisioneros son derechos fundamentales que protegen a todos los estadounidenses del abuso de poder del gobierno. Estos derechos incluyen disposiciones contra inspecciones e incautaciones injustificadas, el derecho a una fianza razonable, el derecho al debido proceso legal y el derecho a no estar sujeto a castigos crueles e inusuales.

Estos derechos son indispensables en una sociedad libre.
