The Departure of Superintedent Terry Grier

The ACLU is disappointed by the news that Superintendent Terry Grier will likely leave the San Diego Unified School District after a year and a half. The ACLU found in Grier a partner who was willing to take on issues of inequality in education. We support the Board’s and the community’s effort to find a way for him to stay.

The ACLU, however, does not condone various efforts to use Superintendent Grier’s departure to take cheap political shots and oversimplify what has happened.

If Grier cannot be persuaded to stay, we should all avoid the blame game and political maneuvering, and instead begin a constructive process focused on the leadership qualities we seek in a new superintendent who will move the city to a shared vision of improving education for all students.
